There is nowhere quite like Egerszálok's Spa in Hungary. Granted there are baths galore in the country especially in this region but it is the surroundings that make Egerszálok stand out from the crowd.
Looking like a gigantic pile of snow forgotten by the sun, the 'Salt Hill', as it is referred to by locals, feeds the spa below with thermal water, water so rich in minerals that over centuries it has formed this natural monument.
Egerszálok's Travertine Hill
This natural phenomena is formed when the hot water (65-68°C) coming from 430 metres below the surface reacts with the cooler temperatures and the minerals in the water solidify producing the white stone (called Travertine).
Not all the minerals harden and it is those that remain in the water and collect in the spa below that are said to help with various conditions.
The water is rich in calcium, magnesium and hydrocarbonates and is indicated for inflammation, degenerative musculoskeletal conditions (e.g. arthritis, rheumatism etc.), post-operative rehabilitation, skin conditions (eczema and psoriasis) and gynaecological disorders.
The mineral-rich water cascades down the travertine hill and into the spa
In the past it was possible to clamber all over the hill and sit in the naturally-formed pools now, however, one cannot climb on the travertine formation and must pay to avail of the therapeutic waters.
This bathing and hospitality complex goes by the name of 'The Saliris Resort Spa Hotel', if you are staying at the hotel then entrance to the spa is included, if not you have to pay for admission to the spa: here are the admission charges as well as prices for the multitude of treatments available.

There are plenty of places to stay in Egerszálok if one day is not enough for you. Among the better are the hotel attached to the spa, the four star Saliris Hotel and the other four star establishment in the village (and a far better hotel all round) the Shiraz.
The Hotel Shiraz brings a north-African flavour to Egerszálok
