Wine Events

Egri Csillag Wine Festival, April 30th - May 2nd

The second biggest wine event in Eger's year is taking place at the end of the month. For three days, Szépasszonyvölgy (Valley of the Beautiful Woman) will be awash with merriment.

Egri Csillag is a relatively new white, cuvee wine and this is its birthday party. There will be over 25 wine producers showcasing 50 wines, wine conoisseurs will be able to quaff their drink of choice to the sounds of many a band.

Acts booked for the 3 day festival include the lauded Csik Zenekar and Bon Bon who will be celebrating their 20th anniversary in the Márai Arena located in the Valley. For the full festival line up take a look below.

Critical Mass, April 22nd

If you're in Eger, you can get hold of a bicycle and you would like to make an environmental statement, then the 18th Critical Mass will be right up your street. Meet at Dobo Ter at 17.00 and enjoy a traffic-free cycle around Eger. Suitable for all ages and abilities - it is a very gentle workout. I think I'll be going, if I can find a bike.

CarLife Exhibition, April 25th (10.00-19.00)

Bicycles a bit sedate for you? You're in luck as the Plaza is hosting a car show in its inner courtyard. All manner of gas guzzling vehicles will be there - custom-built cars, tuned cars, car engines and other car stuff (entrance is free).

For children

As well as the programs organised as part of the Spring Festival (see above), the following may prove of interest to the little ones:

Earth Day, April 22nd (09.00-17.00)

Organised in association with the county's children's library, Earth Day takes place in Eger's main park (Érsekkert). At the moment, details are a bit scant but if the past years are anything to go by there will be many NGOs there providing activities, programs and demonstrations with an environmental slant for kids. A worthy day out.

For movers and shakers
(i.e. not me)

Gödör Club, every Saturday in April (10.00-late).

Strut your stuff under the cathedral with Resident Djs, Dj.Boby / Dj Petty. They play a mix of stuff including: Retro, Hip-Hop, Funky, R&B, Party-rock and a bunch of other stuff. Get in before midnight and its free, otherwise its 500huf

Other events worth noting

Groomsman Meeting in Demjén, April 25th. (All day)

If you want to experience a unique Hungarian cultural tradition, then this event in Demjén is worth a visit (although you will have to drive there or get a bus from Eger`s central bus station). Professional groomsmen from all over Hungary will gather in the village to celebrate their craft, there will be a reenactment of a traditional Hungarian wedding along with a lot of food (it is Hungary, after all)

What is the collective noun for groomsmen?

English Language Films

There's a serious paucity of films in English this April, the trend for dubbing foreign language films into Hungarian is not letting up one bit. In fact, there is only one this month: the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel which is playing in the Agria Cinema (in the Agria Plaza) from April 9th-15th at 20.30

And finally......

There is a whole lot more going on in Eger this month but most of it will require at least some knowledge of Hungarian. If you are disappointed with what is here, then pop over to the egriprogramok site to look at their April events calendar (in Hungarian)
