Bambara Hotel

Bringing a little bit of Africa to Hungary

The Bambara is located in Felsőtárkány at the foot of the Bükk hills and on the doorstep of a forested National Park.

Those wishing to be pampered will be drawn to the Bambara's wellness facilities (see right hand column for more details) and peaceful location.

Just 8 km from Eger, guests can enjoy the tranquility of the Hungarian countryside safe in the knowledge that should they grow tired of all those trees then urban life is but a short journey away.

Moroccan inspired architecture comes to Hungary

The Bambara caters for all, be they families, couples or businesses looking to avail of the 5 fabulous conference rooms.

Named after the Bambara people who can be found living in the west African countries of Mali, Senegal and Guinea, the hotel tries very hard to create an African atmosphere.

The African theme runs throughout the place: in the architecture, the entertainment, some of the employees (of African origin), the resident meerkats (yes, you read correctly) and the interior decoration.

The Bambara is one of two themed hotels in the Eger locality, the other, called the Shiraz also with a North African vibe, is located south-west of Felsotarkany in the mineral spa village of Egerszalók.

I am fully aware that it is the domestic market that the Bambara caters for, primarily Hungarians who need an escape from their everyday toils and so a few days in an African-themed hotel does them the world of good.

However, I find it hard to understand why a visitor to Hungary would want to stay in a hotel that is doing its level best to forget the country in which it is located.

The hotel reception - no, you can't escape the African 'vibe'

Thankfully, the African theme is not all this hotel has to offer. Located just a few kilometres north east of Eger, the Bambara has all the facilities, activities and comforts that you would expect to find in a four star hotel (see details in the right hand column).

The Bambara - the good and the bad

What you find below are two columns: one outlining the positives of the Bambara and the other the negatives. This information is collated from hotel review websites such as tripadvisor.com and booking.com.

Due to the subjective nature of reviews, I have only included positive/negative experiences given by English-speaking guests (this is because this site is aimed at English speakers) and repeated by three or more individuals.

The Good

Great for kids

Beautiful location

Plenty of activities and facilities

Looks great

Fantastic wellness facilities

The Bad

Questionable customer service

Language (English) issues

No doors on bathrooms/toilets of rooms

Pools a bit on the small side

Food not up to scratch

Final thought

Overall, most guests recommend the Bambara and state that they would visit again. Tripadvisor.com reviewers give the Bambara an 80% rating and booking.com 8.5 out of 10.

Generally, it is foreign visitors who are more critical of the Bambara than Hungarian particularly when it comes to the hotel's customer service. Read into that what you will.
