Ice cream is not something most visitors to Hungary would associate with the country, hence the surprise I see on many tourists' faces when they first try a cone from one of Eger's ice cream parlours.
However, there is ice cream and there is ice cream; we have selected what we believe to be the best purveyors of ice cream in Eger
Sarvari Cukraszda - the best-known of Eger's ice cream parlours
A new place - just opened on Bajcsy Zsilinszky Street - serving run-of-the-mill ice creams with one, fantastic exception: their Kalács Ice Dream Delight! If you're a fan of extra sweet desserts with extra sweetness added then this might tickle your fancy. I can't really explain what it is but take a look at the photo below.
As with most ice cream vendors in Eger, Paradice is only open from April to September. See map below for location.
Ask an Egerian where the best ice cream is and invariably they will say this place. Four generations of the Sávári family have been turning out high quality cakes, pastries and ice cream from this location since 1928, making it one of the oldest businesses in Eger.
With queues often stretching to the street, Sárvári is the local's favourite. The dozen or so flavours of home-made ice cream are prepared daily, using old family recipes.
Small, without any seating to speak of, the shop's patrons hang around on the shaded benches outside the shop munching on their creamy delights.
Address: 3300 Eger, Kossuth L. u. 1
Opening Hours: Monday-Friday 07.00-18.00, Saturday-Sunday 10.00-18.00
Tony Bácsi (literally translated as Uncle Tony) is famous in Eger, his ice cream window is on Széchenyi utca next to the Lotto shop and, as far as I know, has no official name but is referred to as Tony Bácsi's by everybody.
Tony eschews the fancy flavours for the old favourites made with quality ingredients and a lot of care and attention. Be sure to get here early, his ice creams sell quickly and you don't want to be disappointed.
Address: 3300 Eger, Szechenyi utca (next to the LOTTO shop)
Opening Hours: Morning until sold out
Marján doesn't just serve delicious ice cream but cakes and desserts to rival the best in Eger.
There is also seating a plenty and a terrace on which to enjoy your gelato. Situated at the foot of the castle, a stop here is always a welcome break from a day's sightseeing.

Of course there are plenty of other places in Eger selling good ice cream but the above are a cut above the rest and well worth a visit.
