Eger, Hungary at Dusk (All Images on this page © Andyzbisko)
Just 90 minutes from Budapest, well-served by public transport and arguably the most beautiful city in Hungary, Eger is ideal for those wishing to escape the big city vibe of the capital.
Eger is little-known outside of Hungary, making it relatively unspoilt as it hasn't been subjected to the same crass commercialisation as Budapest.
Consequently, the city has managed to hold on to its uniqueness, giving visitors a taste of the real Hungary not a saccharine pastiche.
Its significance is reflected in the fact that it is the third most visited city in Hungary after Budapest and is second only to the capital in the amount of protected buildings within its boundaries.
Eger is on the edge of the stunning Bükk National Park, a mecca for walkers
Eger has all the advantages of a small city with the added feature of being slap bang in the middle of some of the most stunning scenery in Hungary. Not only that but surrounding Eger is a myriad of small villages all boasting fascinating histories and incomparable Magyar character.
